21st Century Watercolour is an annual open painting competition organised by the Royal Watercolour Society. The aim of the competition is to encourage innovation in the use of water-based media on paper and to stimulate fresh approaches to what are considered to be watercolour’s traditional strengths.
Artists are invited to submit up to three framed, glazed water-based paintings on paper. Work is selected by a panel of judges. Last year the panel consisted of Gillian Llewellyn-Lloyd from the Llewellyn-Alexander Gallery, David Kitchin from the Rowley Gallery, Richard Sorrell PRWS and David Paskett RWS. In previous years numerous prizes, worth in excess of £10,000, have been kindly donated by various individuals and organisations including the Royal Watercolour Society, St. Cuthbert’s Mill, Baker Tilly, Winsor and Newton and Elizabeth Scott-Moore Fund.
Successful applicants are often encouraged to apply for Membership; in 2007 several were made Associate Members, including Fay Ballard, Bill Henderson and George Devlin. In 2008 three of the four new Associate Members – Thomas Plunkett, Denis Ryan and Caroline McAdam Clark also exhibited in 21st Century Watercolour.
