RWS DVD - Into the Light

Richard     David     Janet
Richard Pikesley RWS  David Paskett PRWS Janet Treloar VPRWS

Three Members of the Royal Watercolour Society took part in a film project in St Ives. The resulting DVD documents their different approaches to the enormous challenge of St Ives, not only with its history and cultural heritage, but also with its famous light and the astonishing scenery of the surrounding bays and cliffs.

The three artists all have a different agenda and approach.

Richard Pikesley is best known for his work with landscape, in both oil and watercolour. Following on from watercolourists since Turner, Richard is concerned with capturing the fleeting essence of light and mood. He literally chases the weather. In the course of our film we follow Richard as he wrestles not only with the extraordinary light of St Ives but also with the challenge of the Botallack Tin Mines which inspired both Ben Nicholson and Peter Lanyon.

David Paskett is best known for his studies of pattern, shape and shadows, particularly in the Far East. To take David out of the studio and throw him into the vigour and rigour of the Cornish weather was an immense challenge. He found that undertaking both inspirational and exhausting. His honest and heartfelt recording of the struggle of the creative process provides a unique insight into the life and thoughts of a professional artist.

Janet Treloar is a native Cornish artist. Her work relies far more on spontaneity and an instant response to her environment than that of the other two artists. More than both David and Richard, Jan is steeped in the history of St Ives and her work bears the weight of the artists who have gone before her, from Sandra Blow to Peter Lanyon.
