David Brayne

ELECTED ARWS 2001 & RWS 2004

David was born in 1954, and studied at Nottingham School of Art and Exeter University. He has lived for many years within walking distance of the Somerset Levels. This flat, watery land, echoing the wide sky and liminal expanses of his south Lincolnshire childhood, touches much of his recent work.
His landscapes and interiors are both remembered and imagined, distilled to shape and colour in the formal space of the paintings. The romanticism embodied in this sense of place stands alongside his painterly treatment of the surface and the use of figurative subject matter as a vehicle for more abstract considerations. David mixes his own paints from raw pigments, building layer upon layer of luminous glazes, sometimes working into the paint with pastels and occasionally using touches of silver or gold leaf.

David’s paintings have been widely exhibited and awarded a number of prizes, including first prize in the National Open Art Competition.
