Born at Mission Mambasa, Democratic Republic of Congo in 1949, Jim studied drawing and painting at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee between 1967 – 1972 (with time out to return to Congo) and completed a postgraduate degree in 1973. He taught for a short time as Principal Teacher of Art and Design in secondary schools and Angus and now paints full time, working in watercolour and oils.
For the past fifteen years Jim Dunbar has focussed intensely on his home environment and the countryside and coast within a tight two-mile radius. He concentrates on people, objects and places that have a strong significance to him in some way. This sense of connection brings an essential spiritual element to his work. Jim’s work is representational, with the emphasis on sound drawing. He paints in both oil and watercolour.
