Jione Choi

RWS GUEST MEMBER FROM 2024 - 2026

Recently, Jione Choi has been reflecting on memories associated with jet lag. As a South Korean artist working in the UK, she frequently travels between the two countries and often experiences intense jet lag. During these periods, her two worlds seem to collide, creating a space between South Korea and the UK, and between different time zones. This experience leads her to question her identity and sense of belonging. In response, Jione constructs an ‘in-between’ pictorial space in her paintings. Using hybrid watercolour materials that combine Eastern and Western pigments and binders, she explores how material hybridity can embody the experience of living between cultures.

Jione received an MFA in Painting from the Slade School of Fine Art, London, in 2019. She recently won the RWS Young Artist Award 2024 and the RWS Publicity Prize 2023, awarded by the Royal Watercolour Society. Her works were included in the Drawing Biennial 2024 and 2026 organised by Drawing Room. She also won First Prize in the 9th Art Gemini Prize. In 2022, one of her works was acquired for the Standard Chartered Bank art collection, and she won the Signature Art Prize in the Drawing & Printmaking category.
