Are you an artist working in water-based media?
The RWS offers a variety of opportunities for established and emerging artists alike, whether you're attempting using watercolour for the very first time, or you're an industry professional with an impressive exhibition CV under your belt.
The RWS Open (formerly known as the Contemporary Watercolour Competition) is an annual open submission exhibition where artists at all stages of their career are invited to submit works in any water-based media on paper.
Submissions are now closed and will reopen in October 2022
Become a Member
Royal Watercolour Society artists are elected on merit by the current Membership - a tradition dating back to the Society’s foundation over 200 years ago. Elections take place annually and applications are made via an online form, followed by an assessment of physical works.
Young Artist Award
The RWS Young Artist Award was established in 2019 as a way to encourage younger artists to pursue a career in painting. Winners of the award are given a guest membership to the RWS for two years, providing them with the opportunity to exhibit, sell and promote their work through the Society. Winners are selected annually from the pool of sucessful entrants to the RWS Open.
Workshops, Talks & Events
The RWS delivers a series of workshops, talks and events designed to educate and inspire those interested in painting, water-based media and the arts in general. Programmes are released for the spring and autumn, as well as one-off events taking place throughout the year.
