Kate Wilson

ELECTED ARWS 2025

Kate Wilson studied at Winchester School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools. She is a former head of Painting, Drawing and Art History at Morley College, London and the author of Drawing and Painting - Materials and Techniques for Contemporary Artists published by Thames and Hudson. She develops her ideas through drawing and collage, and paints in watercolour, oil and egg tempera.

“I live and work in South London and draw and paint the familiar objects of my daily landscape. I've long used watercolour as a way of looking at and understanding my source material.  For me it's an intimate medium, reminding me of childhood. Because I tend to make them when first exploring new imagery, my watercolours are usually small in scale.  They often turn into collages - I cut them up to isolate the bits that work and arrange them into compositions.  I draw back into them too, with soluble pencils and marker pens.

For some time, I’ve paid particular attention to things that are overlooked, thrown away or abandoned and focus on plastic and paper rubbish seen and picked up from the streets around where I live.”
