During the renovation phase of the Whitcomb Street Project RWS artist Julia Midgley visited the building site where she produced a series of what would turn out to be twenty nine drawings (including one triptych) documenting the construction and development of the gallery spaces and historic vaults rooms.

The drawings, which can be viewed in full below, were all produced on site by Julia who often had to find a scarce quiet spot amongst the chaos of the construction site to set up her mobile art station, usually comprising a drawing board, a small paint palette and not much else. Julia’s drawings manage to capture the urgency and busy environment of the soon-to-be contemporary gallery space, giving the viewer a sense of what Julia experienced and encountered during her many visits to site. This body of work is a fantastic visual diary of an important time in the Society’s history: the renovations of the space they once occupied in the 19th Century to ready it for their return almost 200 years later.

For this body of work to be acquired by the Royal Watercolour Society Collection it would mean that future generations of Members, researchers and supporters are able to understand how the works unfolded through the eyes of an RWS artist. As a special initiative to acquire the works we are inviting you, our supporters to purchase one of the works from this series, as a donation to the RWS Collection. In return your name as generous donor will be attached to the physical work in the Collection, and also credited alongside the work image on our website shown below.
