'Watercolour for me is a spontaneous response. It’s so easy to be instinctive when painting in situ or using a sketch book. You can be completely unrestrained. Here lies the nub; there’s a big difference in taking risks and or making a big mess! Its about pushing boundaries, trying a new approach, introducing a new colour, abstracting or using a complete wash over the entire painting. Taking risks is exciting and precarious – don’t be too precious about the work, sometimes it comes off, other times it’s a learning curve.'
